Sunday's Best & The Courts
Summer hit 29th and Montgomery like it had something to prove. The sun was sizzling, the pavement was glowing, and Shavonne and her girls — Shantelle, Lee Lee, and Mandee — were strolling through the neighborhood looking for something to get into.

Lee Lee popped her Winterfresh gum like she was getting paid for it. "Yo, let's walk up 33rd. The basketball courts be lit right now. And you know it be some cuties up there hoopin'."

Shantelle tried to play it cool, but everybody knew why she suddenly perked up. If T.Y. was there, Doe was there. And if Doe was there, she was going.

This was the summer everything was supposed to change for them. Junior year was behind them, senior year was coming, and they were determined to glow up, grow up, and step into the world like they owned it.
 
At The Courts - Shavonne & Doe
Doe was one of the most popular boys in the neighborhood — the type everybody knew, even if they didn't want to. Always dripped in Polo, always in the newest Jordans.

Shavonne had liked him since forever, but she was the one who never said it out loud. Shantelle knew. Of course she knew. That's what best friends do.

"You stay close. Even when you don't know why," Ms. Sondra used to tell them.

Back at Doe's & Meanwhile, at T.Y.'s
Later that night, Shavonne ends up at Doe's. It's just them. Music low. The kind of night that feels bigger than it is.

For Doe and Shavonne, it's tender, nervous, and real. It's her first time and he checks in with her the whole way. The moment is more about trust than anything else — about choosing someone you feel safe with.

Across town, Shantelle's night with T.Y. feels completely different. Where Shavonne felt safe, Shantelle feels rushed. Pressured. She keeps saying she's not ready, and T.Y. keeps pushing. It's that confusing, uncomfortable moment a lot of girls know too well — when you like someone but the moment doesn't feel right.
